Scandinavian update!

Posted by Holy Hooligan on May 19, 2008

Since the last update things have actually moved forward. We finally found an indoor place to skate! A hockey rink that is without ice during a few summer months. So there finally have been some real practicing over here! And there is some real progress too! Once out there skating, everyone is learning new stuff all the time. And all those months just thinking about it feels like they never happened. So now we are looking for recruits, and many of them since we still are quite a small group of skaters and refs trying to make this work. And we really have to make things work! The first bout with an all swedish team ever will probably take place early next year. There are still things to work out so that is all I can say right now. But this means the Stockholm skaters really have to work hard so they can put up a fight!

If things are looking brighter in the real world, the same goes for the virtual one. Stockholm Rollerderby(in swedish, it is rollerderby not roller derby) have finally got the website up and with a neat domain! Rollerderby.se is all ours! It is still in beta and only in swedish, but it will grow in the near future. And hopefully it will also be translated into english too. While you wait for that you can always check out the web board that also have been opened up for the public. Log in and get a username!

Well that’s it for now. I’ll post more as things progress over here.

Sad news from Stockholm

Posted by Holy Hooligan on March 15, 2008

Stockholm Rollerderby just posted this on MySpace:

R.I.P. Calle

On Monday 10/3 2008 our friend and referee Calle Feuk died only 35 years old.

He he joined us in Stockholm Rollerderby very recently and many of us had just begun to get to know him. But even though that was the case he had already managed to make an impact with his enthusiasm and energy.

Our thoughts go to those who were closest to Calle.
You will be missed.

The Scandinavian National Team

Posted by Holy Hooligan on February 10, 2008

When I read Hooligals post about the plans for Canada and England to meet this summer I realized how far we up here in the north have to go to be able to compete on a national level. But then it struck me. We almost have enough skaters for a national team already!

When the first steps of Stockholm Rollerderby were taken back in April ’07 we were convinced that we were the only swedes in the world that were into this sport. But pretty soon we were, much to our delight, proven wrong. Every now and then skaters from leagues all over send us mail and tell us how great it is that we have gotten things going “back home”. And it’s not just swedes that drop us a line, skaters with roots in any of the scandinavian countries consider us their “home team” since we still are the only ones over here.

Even though we hardly are a functioning league in Stockholm, Scandinavia is just a few skaters away from having a full National Team if all scandinavians out there would team up! Thanks to skaters like Vix Viking(LRG), Kategory 5(TXRD), Tear E. Hatchet(BBDD), Kit Lizette(LRR) and Swede Hurt(JCRG) scandinavia is already putting it’s mark in the derby world.

And when you think about it, that is not so different from the way it looks in “the big sports” like hockey and football. When the swedish national team is put together very few of the players are playing in the leagues back home. In hockey most are playing in the NHL and in football they are playing Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga or some other league.

Ok, I realize that there are very few other similarities. We have no budget compared to SvIF or SvFF, we do not have thousands of players to chose from, we do not have huge traning facilities or 36.000 supporters coming to our games. But still, I must be allowed to dream about a Scandinavian Roller Derby Team!

But dreaming about what might be true in a distant future is not the only reason to write this blog-post. Another reason to write it is to make sure that everyone knows that all the help and support we get from all you scandinavians out there is very, very appreciated. Not that we don’t appreciate and value the help and support that we get from all you non-scandinavians, but the happiness and joy that we see in the mails from all these emigrats, when they find out about the league back home, is something special. And we love it!

And lets face it. Skaters like Vix, Swede, Kit and the others are the Zlatan, Foppa Forsberg and Fredrik Ljungberg of roller derby! We follow their leagues, check results and try to find out how well “our” skaters did in the last bout. Knowing that there are skaters out there that we know and know us and where we are(both geographically, culturally and in the league development area), and to be able to follow their development, is one of those things that really help keep our spirits up when there is no place to practice, nowhere to get hold of skates, no-one who understand what the drokk you are talking about when you mention the Rust Riot and the rain is pouring down so hard that it even would be impossible to skate on the parkinglot outside the door!

To say it in the most simple way:
Vi älsklar er!

Update on Stockholm RD

Posted by hooligal on January 28, 2008

So here is a short update of what is going on in the Scandinavian Roller Derby Scene. Well, unfortunately i must report that there is not much happening here. Still only one league, StockholmRollerderby(STRD), but there is some interest in Gothenburg and we have heard about a few girls in Skåne(down south in Sweden) who wants to get stuff going, but no real signs of life in any of those areas yet. But we hope that it is just a matter of time before we hear about the first leagues in those areas too.

Here in Stockholm it is way too silent. The reason is of course the lack of a place to skate. Even though we have the warmest winter I can remember we can still not skate outdoors since it is raining all the time, and I think it would be easier to turn Maggie Thatcher into a teddy bear than to find an indoor place to skate in Stockholm. We are at the moment trying out a couple of parking garages in classic guerrilla style, while we keep on searching.

On the happier side of things is that we will be sending three skaters and two refs to LondonRollergirls boot-campin February. Hopefully we will gain alot from this, not just the practice, but contacts, new perspectives and ideas is also what we hope to gain.

I recently found out that there is a rumour going out there that our beloved sport risks being outlawed in Sweden. I find it very hard to think there is any truth in this rumour. Swedish legislators are looking into different kinds of full-contact sports at the moment, but only professional ones Ultimate Fighting, K2and such. Since roller derby only have amateurs playing and the level of violence only is at the same level as ice-hockey, it would be very hard to outlaw it.
