Spring Equi-KNOCKS review

Posted by hooligal on April 2, 2009

rockin-rollers-poster2smallMarch 21st saw the London Rockin Rollers, after FINALLY securing a venue in London, play their first home game against Glasgow Rollergirls Irn Bruisers. Much hard work went into making the bout a night to remember, with lights, a halftime surfcore band Jimmy and the Destroyers, rolling merch girls, kickin DJ Chris Setzer and of course…ROLLER DERBY!

The crowd came out en masse, we sold out to capacity and had to turn people away at the door. The venue was alive and buzzing and after pouring some coke on our slippy wood floor, we were ready to play!

Both teams had not played each other, and had not seen each other play in a very long time. We both went in blind to the other teams strengths and weaknesses, and both teams were certain they would win (arn’t they always?!).

Glasgow turned out to be a highly defensive team of hard hitters, while our jammers are fast and wiley, the hits of their blockers were a shock to the system early in the game. It seemed to be a battle of defence vs offence, and our

girls quickly learned to distract the glasgow blockers as our jammer came through. Unfourtuetly for us, their jammer tended to follow ours through the pack!

Glasgow secured an early lead, staying at least 10 points ahead for most of the game. It was tough and bodies were flying. A scary moment in the first period when Switchblade Sarah went down on her face and didn’t get up.

Medics rushed on as the jam was called off, and we were all frightened for her. But she got up soon to the roar of the worried crowd, and after a good rest, went on to play a fantastic game!

Halftime came for a much needed break and as the band came on the score was GRG 60 LRR 46.

Second half brought the LRR back with new vengence and determination to win the game. First jams saw us close the gap to 62 to 56 and keep the points close for many jams to follow. But GRG were determined to hold onto their advantage, and went on to win the game 106 to 83.

Like most derby matches, the best part was the lovely girls of the visiting team who were overjoyed with the medals and gift bags, and glad to have had such a great time and a great crowd. No grudges held, we all went to the after party for a much needed drink and to compare bruises. A great day for all!

London in Stuttgart Newspaper

Posted by hooligal on October 17, 2008

English meets German, you can get more international then press coverage in another language. Written in german, featuring a photo of Mogatron, Whip It, and Jack Attack from my league the London Rockin Rollers, covers the game between us and the hosting league, the Stuttgart Valley Rollergirlz.

And FYI, MTV is their sports association, not the american music station. 😉

Working towards debut season

Posted by Sue Beyer on September 12, 2008

The Northern Brisbane Rollers (NBR) began in January 2008 and based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia are working towards their debut season starting in April 2009. With 15 regular derby skaters who have passed the first minimum skills test, it’s looking good. “We hope to have at least 30 regular derby skaters by February 2009”, says Chyna Rhino one of the founding members of NBR. “Interest in the beginner derby nights held at Albany Creek Skateaway is increasing, with many eager girls attending regularly”.

NBR has also recently been approved by the ‘Queensland Government Office of Fair Trading’ as an incorporated, not-for-profit Co-op. Being an incorporated co-op provides a flat structure that the founding members of NBR were interested in pursuing, while still enabling NBR to provide insurance for it’s members under Skate Australia.

We’re Back…kinda sorta

Posted by hooligal on September 5, 2008

Inter Derby is back, huzzah! I’m still in the process of setting up new bloggers and such, but we’re back for the sake of saying so.

That being said, I’m still looking for bloggers and contributors.

Gimmie an email interderby at yahoo.com if you want to write full time, or just would like to submit an event, bout recap, press release, news coverage, ANYTHING.

So what’s been going on while I was away?

Rollercon took place, the ultimate getaway and meet and greet for international rollergirls. Leagues from all over the world came and there is no longer a Team World vs USA, oh no, with all the leagues springing up everywhere there was actually enough attendees to do Team UK vs Team Australia or the Farkin’ ‘Elles vs Cor Blimeys as they named themselves, with Team UK coming out on top 43-28!

Canada fielded two teams, East vs West, with East skating their way to victory.

London Rollergirls are hosting the first European tournament July 18-19th 2009. Open to all European teams, but all roller fans are welcome to come watch and/or help out! Stay tuned for details on that!

They also have their first intraleague bout with their BRAND NEW teams coming up Sept 27th. It’s gonna be the Ultraviolent Femmes giving some lashes to the fearless SuffraJets for the first one. The other team, yet to debut, is the Steam Rollers!

And my own team London Rockin Rollers are set for another border crossing adventure to take on the Stuttgart Valley Rollergirlz in Stuttgart, Germany, also on Sept 27th. A year after our first game and defeat, we are back in a bout aptly named Time For Revenge!
